This Draft Standard for Trial Use contains the format and establishes the data contents of the Routing and Carrier Instruction Transaction Set (853) for use within the context of an Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) environment. This transaction set provides the sender with the capability to transmit detailed routing and carrier information pertinent to a route. This transaction set only provides routing information and does not convey information about a shipping event or provide shipping authorization.
To indicate the start of a transaction set and to assign a control number
To indicate the beginning of a transaction set
To transmit information in a free-form format, if necessary, for comment or special instruction
To specify pertinent dates and times
To identify a party by type of organization, name, and code
To specify additional names or those longer than 35 characters in length
To specify the location of the named party
To specify the geographic place of the named party

To identify a person or office to whom administrative communications should be directed
To specify the carrier and sequence of routing and provide transit time information
To specify transportation details relating to the equipment used by the carrier
To specify transportation special handling requirements, or hazardous materials information, or both

To specify physical measurements or counts, including dimensions, tolerances, variances, and weights
